Aurora
This piece was developed by Jonathan and Jennie McCall as part of the corona virus lockdown period when they were brought together by Design Nation as buddies. They worked on-line and in their workshops finding ways to make a light sculpture. Intended as the start of a collection of lighting made from wood and parian.
Aurora is a sculptural light, imagined by two crafts people. The inspiration came from Scottish connections and a shared love of light in the darkness of Covid.
Wood and ceramics are not natural partners but with a little ingenuity and determination they have found a way to dance here. The flexibility of wood is stabilised by the solidity of parian. The translucence of parian complements the opacity of wood. Wood just wants to shine and stretches itself by becoming thin beyond comfort.
Both are held together by firm fixings. Just like Jennie and Jonathan
